SINGAPORE — The rate of potential mosquito breeding in construction sites and homes is still “unacceptably high”, said Minister for Environment and Water Resources Vivian Balakrishnan.
Dr Balakrishnan said Singaporeans have to take responsibility of their homes and neighbourhoods for the dengue situation to improve. He added NEA officers have now made about 1.8 million visits in the last six months, but it is not possible for them to be “everywhere all the time”.
Dengue numbers peaked last week, hitting the 10,000 mark. As of Friday (July 18), there were more than 10,940 cases.
“Will it get better? I think it will get better, but the point is we still need to push this public message that we have to lower mosquito breeding, and we’ve got to go just beyond identifying and fining people who are breeding mosquitoes because that’s almost too late. We have to go upstream and prevent potential accumulation of stagnant water,” said Dr Balakrishnan. CHANNEL NEWSASIA
