RC centres open doors to students studying for exams

SINGAPORE — Students looking for a quiet and comfortable environment to study for their year-end examinations can now turn to their local Residents’ Committee (RC) centre.

SINGAPORE — Students looking for a quiet and comfortable environment to study for their year-end examinations can now turn to their local Residents’ Committee (RC) centre.

Since early last month, more than 200 RC centres across Singapore have opened their doors to students, offering them an air-conditioned room to study in. All RC centres also provide a free flow of drinks and light snacks, while some have free Wi-Fi for students, said the People’s Association (PA) today (Oct 15).

“Our RC volunteers noticed that many students were studying at the void decks and other crowded places such as fast food outlets,” said PA Chief Executive Director Ang Hak Seng. “To provide a quiet and air-conditioned environment near their homes where students can concentrate, they decided to open up RC centres.

Some residents have volunteered to coach students on certain subjects, said Mr Ang.

Mr Yap Swee Kiat, for instance, an ITE lecturer in his 30s, coaches secondary school students on subjects such as Mathematics and Science at the Hwi Yoh Ville RC centre every Friday and Sunday.
