Residents of Sembawang share stories in new book

SINGAPORE — A book containing stories of Sembawang, as told by its own residents, was launched yesterday.

SINGAPORE — A book containing stories of Sembawang, as told by its own residents, was launched yesterday.

Titled The Chronicles of Remembrance, the book was put together by about 80 students who interviewed residents at their homes. In the book, the 50 residents gave their perspectives of how Singapore has changed and the challenges it went through. It also has pictures of and interesting facts about Sembawang.

In conjunction with the launch, about 500 residents went on a trail to visit the places of historical significance mentioned in the book.

Speaking at the event, National Development Minister Khaw Boon Wan, who is also Member of Parliament for the ward, said how the country is governed will shape the next 50 years.

“If you have a good, honest government — it does not matter which party it comes from, so long as you have good, honest, capable political leaders who sacrifice themselves for the interest of Singaporeans — then Singapore SG100 will be even more outstanding than SG50,” he said.

Mr Khaw also brought up the 55th birthday of Housing and Development Board (HDB) yesterday and spoke about the benefits it has brought to Singaporeans. “Every Singaporean will be able to afford their own home and that’s because of CPF (the Central Provident Fund), that’s because of HDB and that’s because of good government,” he said.
