SINGAPORE — After nearly three weeks of work, the packing of the SG50 funpacks — which will be given to all 1.25 million resident households for the nation’s Golden Jubilee celebrations — will wrap up on Thursday (July 23).

In total, 15 million items would have been placed into the funpacks by army personnel and several voluntary groups. Since the packing operation began on July 3 at an empty carpark in Kranji Camp 3, 970 army personnel have been working from 8am to 5pm on any one day to pack the bags.

Volunteers, including those from welfare organisations such as the Down Syndrome Association and the Movement for the Intellectually Disabled of Singapore, have also lent a hand in packing 36,000 of the funpacks under the “A Funpack from Me to You” project.

The funpacks will contain a message from the packer, which recipients will be encouraged to reply to.

Corporal Terence Lee, a 26-year-old full-time army national serviceman, who is helping to ensure that the packing procedures run smoothly, said: “When we hit a specific target ... all of us treat one another and sing songs to motivate ourselves.”

The organising committee started to deliver the first of the funpacks to community centres around the island on July 8. Residents in several constituencies, such as Tampines, began receiving their packs this week.

Apart from the funpacks, another 300,000 goodie bags, with extra items such as food and water, will be handed out to spectators of the National Day Parade on Aug 9 as well as the preview shows.
