S$18 million for mechanised parking systems in 3 HDB estates

The Housing and Development Board (HDB) will fork out about S$18 million for the mechanised parking systems to be built in three HDB estates.

The Housing and Development Board (HDB) will fork out about S$18 million for mechanised parking systems to be built in three HDB estates.

First announced last year, Yishun, Changi Village and Bangkit Road were chosen as pilot sites for these systems, aiming to address the car park crunch in older Housing and Development Board (HDB) estates.

These mechanised parking systems will allow motorists to park their vehicle in car-lifts which could be moved vertically and parked in designated pallet storage racks, for instance.

In particular, the pilot site for a mechanised parking system along Bangkit Road would add another 60 car park lots, wrote National Development Minister Khaw Boon Wan in a blog post today (14 Sep).

The remaining two sites in Yishun Avenue 4 and Changi Village Road will add another 22 and 137 car park lots respectively.

Given the rising car population, Mr Khaw noted in his blog post that it may not be possible to build new car park lots in existing precincts due to the lack of available land.

“One solution is to build mechanised parking systems or MPS, as it takes up less land than conventional car parks,” he wrote.

Mr Khaw also launched the commencement ceremony for the Bangkit Road site this afternoon. Work at the three pilot sites will start next week and the systems are expected to be completed by the third quarter of next year.
