S$30,000 collected from walk-in donations: S'pore Red Cross

SINGAPORE – The Singapore Red Cross (SRC) has collected S$30,000 as of 2pm today (April 27) for relief and recovery efforts in Nepal, which was struck by a devastating earthquake on Saturday.

SINGAPORE – The Singapore Red Cross (SRC) has collected S$30,000 as of 2pm today (April 27) for relief and recovery efforts in Nepal, which was struck by a devastating earthquake on Saturday.

The amount came from walk-in donations since 9am this morning at the Red Cross House despite the rain.

The S$30,000 raised is on top of S$50,000 worth of relief items and emergency supplies donated to the relief effort by the SRC itself. The organisation is expected to release more details on the various channels to donate.

The death toll from the earthquake in Nepal has risen above 3,000, according to latest news reports, which quoted Nepal’s national disaster management chief. The Government has contributed S$100,000 towards this appeal as seed money to further the efforts of SRC.

Singapore Red Cross said in a media statement that it’s first response team will be in Nepal on Wednesday to ascertain the needs on the ground and expected to be on the ground later this week. Thereafter three medical teams will be deployed in support of the relief efforts.

They are also operating extended office hours to receive walk-in donations and have set up other channels through which the public can donate.

1. Cheque: Make cheque payable to ‘Singapore Red Cross Society’, indicate ‘Nepal Earthquake Relief Fund’, donor’s name, contact number and address at the back, and post it to Red Cross House, 15 Penang Lane, Singapore 236486.

2. DBS / POSB ATM

- Insert your ATM card and select “English” and enter PIN when prompted

- Select “iBanking, Cashcard and More Services”

- Select “Credit Card/Bill Payment”

- Select “Nepal Earthquake Relief Fund” from the billing corporation list

- Enter telephone number as the Bill Reference Number

- Select account type (e.g. Autosave, Current or Savings Account) and enter donation amount

- At the confirmation screen, press “Confirm” to complete transaction

3. Online portals: Donations can also be made online via SG Gives. Please visit www.sggives.org/NepalSRCS or Simplygiving: https://www.simplygiving.com/Appeal/redcrossnepalappeal

4. DBS Internet banking (available from Wednesday, April 29)

- Login to DBS iBanking

- Click on “Payment Services” > “Bill Payment”

- Select “Nepal Earthquake Relief” from the billing corporation list

- Select the deposit account to debit donation

- Enter telephone number as the Consumer Reference Number and donation amount

Singapore-based Mercy Relief has also dedicated S$60,000 to acute relief efforts. A Mercy Relief preliminary disaster response team is on the way to the Nepalese capital of Kathmandu to ascertain ground needs and procure initial batch of relief supplies.
