SINGAPORE – A $323 million contract has been awarded to Takenaka Corporation for expansion works of Changi Airport’s Terminal 1.

In a statement released today (March 3), Changi Airport Group (CAG) announced that there’ll be new check-in counters with two new check-in rows to be installed to increase passenger handling capacity. An upgraded baggage handling system will be fully automated with a sortation capability to better support the implementation of self check-in and self bag-drop functions. This will also “improve productivity for airlines and ground handlers.

Two additional arrival baggage claim carousels will also be installed.

Mr Fong Kok Wai, CAG’s executive vice president for engineering and development said: “Together, we aim to deliver at the end of this journey, a much needed increase in the capacity of our oldest terminal that will allow us to serve our passengers better.”

He expressed confidence in Takenaka Corporation for its “extensive experience in airport infrastructure projects”, and highlighted the “challenging” nature of the expansion works amid ongoing airport operations.

Works by Takenaka Corporation are expected to be completed in 2019 and will take place concurrently with separate redevelopment works under the Jewel Changi Airport project, such as the construction of new ground transport facilities, pedestrian link bridges and general expansion of the T1 Arrival and Baggage Claim Halls’ floor plate, said CAG.

The Japanese construction firm has been involved in several of Changi Airport’s development projects including the ongoing construction of Terminal 4 as well as previous upgrading projects, will undertake the revamp of the Terminal 1 Departure Check-in Hall and full automation of the baggage handling system beginning this month, according to CAG, which manages Changi Airport.
