SINGAPORE — Officers from the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) conducted checks at public entertainment outlets and shopping centres at Bugis, Sengkang, and Chinatown on Friday night (Dec 12) as part of its yearly stepped-up enforcement checks during the festive period.

SCDF said they found several fire safety violations, including non-functioning exit lights, obstructions to common passageways and exit doors, and using staircases as storage areas.

These violations could impede the safe evacuation of people during an emergency, the SCDF said.

SCDF will continue its stepped-up enforcement checks throughout the festive season. Fire safety infringements are an offence under the Fire Safety Act. Contravention of the act may result in a fine not exceeding S$10,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding 6 months, or both.

For first time offenders, they may be served with the Fire Hazard Abatement Notices (FHAN) or Notice of Fire Safety Offence (NFSO) depending on the type and severity of the violations, the SCDF said.
