School placement exercise for returning Singaporeans opens July 8

SINGAPORE — Singaporean children returning from overseas and who wish to join secondary schools, junior colleges (JC) or Millennia Institute (MI) at the beginning of academic year 2016 can register for school placement from tomorrow (July 8).

SINGAPORE — Singaporean children returning from overseas and who wish to join secondary schools, junior colleges (JC) or Millennia Institute (MI) at the beginning of academic year 2016 can register for school placement from tomorrow (July 8).

The School Placement Exercise for Returning Singaporeans (SPERS) is a centralised placement exercise held at the end of the year for Returning Singaporeans (RS). “With SPERS, Singaporean parents working abroad can look forward to easier re-entry into the mainstream school system for their children when they return to Singapore. RS children will only need to sit for one set of centralised SPERS tests for school admission,” said the Ministry of Education (MOE) today.

Returning Singaporean children seeking admission to Secondary 1 to 3 next year can take the SPERS-Sec tests on Sept 29, while those seeking admission to Pre-University 1 can take the SPERS-JC/MI tests on Nov 18 this year.

As Sec 4 and Pre-U 2 are national examination years, returning Singaporeans generally would not re-join at these levels.

Applicants will receive their school placement results in December and will be able to join the secondary schools and JC/MI at the start of the school term in early 2016, said the MOE.

Those unable to return in time to take the SPERS-Sec tests can take the Supplementary Placement Exercise in mid-December, and receive their school placement results in early February 2016, said the MOE. Registration for the Supplementary Placement Exercise will open in October this year.

For those seeking admission to primary schools, the MOE will offer a place in a primary school with vacancies near the child’s home. Returning Singaporeans can approach the MOE at any time of the year for assistance, and there will not be any placement tests for admission, said the MOE, adding that the primary school may, however, conduct assessment tests after admission.

The registration for the 2015 SPERS can be done online at:
