SINGAPORE — A simulated shootout took place at IMM shopping mall this afternoon (Oct 27), with “assailants” firing “shots” at members of the public. This was followed by a simulated car explosion near the mall’s entrance.

This was one of the three simulated scenarios during Exercise Heartbeat 2014, an emergency preparedness exercise held annually. The two-day exercise was led by the police force in collaboration with the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF).

An exercise conducted yesterday also saw a simulated terror swarm attack at Dhoby Ghaut MRT station as well as a gunman scenario at Marina Bay Link Mall, followed by a simulated explosion at Downtown MRT station.

Speaker of Parliament Halimah Yacob was the special guest at the exercise today.

Members of Singapore’s Safety and Security Watch Group (SSWG), made up of building owners in Singapore, also participated in Monday’s scenario. The group was set up in 2003, then known as the Security Watch Group, as a way for the business community to fight crime and terrorism threats. CHANNEL NEWSASIA
