Singapore is 15th most popular destination for New Year’s Eve celebrations: Study

SINGAPORE — Singapore is the 15th most popular destination on TripAdvisor for global travellers researching on where to spend a New Year break, the travel site said today (Dec 18).

There was a 4 per cent increase in search traffic on the site for Singapore during the New Year’s Eve period compared to average searches throughout the rest of the year, TripAdvisor’s data showed. Singapore was also the only Asian destination within the top fifteen after Bangkok, which ranked 10th.

The top three destinations for global travellers during the New Year Eve’s period were London, New York City and Paris in that order. (See list below for global travellers’ top 15 destinations.)

Among Singaporean travellers, the most popular destinations searched were Taipei, Hong Kong and, curiously enough, Singapore itself. (See list below for Singaporeans’ top 10 destinations)

“As much as Singaporeans love to travel, many are still staying in the country for their New Year break,” TripAdvisor noted.

The TripAdvisor study also compared the average nightly prices of hotels during the New Year Eve’s period.

In Singapore, the average nightly price for hotel rooms was S$259.45. Hong Kong hotels were the most expensive during this period at S$686.40 per night — according to TripAdvisor, this is 194 per cent more expensive than the average rate throughout the rest of the year. For Taipei, a night in a hotel in Taiwan’s capital city would cost an average of S$251.81, 47 per cent higher than usual.
