SINGAPORE — Singapore’s Gardens by the Bay and Marina Bay Sands have made it to Facebook’s top 20 most checked-in locations around the world this year, ahead of other well known attractions such as the Hollywood Walk of Fame and Madison Square Park.

Gardens by the Bay was ranked 13th while MBS was ranked 14th.

Top of the list was Disney properties, which was a combination of its parks and resorts worldwide, followed by Universal Studios properties, which also included Universal Studios Singapore. Siam Paragon in Bangkok was in 6th place.

Within Singapore, the other popular spots on Facebook included the Singapore Botanic Gardens and Sentosa.

Two events in Singapore were also featured in a Facebook video highlighting memorable events of the year: Singapore’s SG50 celebrations and the passing of founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew in March.

The video also featured satellite imagery from the flyby of Mars and the world’s solidarity with Paris following the terror attacks last month.

Facebook today also released several Year in Review lists, which measured by how frequently a topic was mentioned in Facebook posts made between Jan 1 and Dec 1 this year. This was done anonymously and does not take into account where the post originated from.

The top Facebook topic of the year was the US Presidential Election, with US President Barack Obama and Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump making the top two global politicians.

Game of Thrones was the most mentioned TV show, and the new Star Wars episode clinched top spot in the movies list.
