Singapore retained its top ranking in having the fastest peak Internet connection speed in the world during the third quarter of this year, and was third globally for average Internet connection speed, a report on Internet connectivity showed.

Internet users here could hit speeds of up to 162 Mbps during peak connections, which is an increase of 3 per cent over last quarter’s figure, and more than four times faster than the global average of 37.2 Mbps.

The average Internet connection speed in Singapore has also increased 5.3 per cent to hit 18 Mbps in the quarter — which is close to three times the global average of 6.3 Mbps — but still lagged behind South Korea (26.3 Mbps) and Hong Kong (20.1 Mbps), which took the top spots.

Akamai Technologies, a content delivery network services provider based in the United States, said in its latest quarterly State of the Internet — Connectivity Report released yesterday that there was “strong positive connectivity growth” across the Asia-Pacific region.

This quarter was the first time all 15 of the surveyed Asia-Pacific countries had average connection speeds above the 4 Mbps broadband threshold.

The region continued to lead the world in average peak connection speeds in the third quarter, with the top four global leaders all found there. Singapore, Hong Kong and South Korea all had average peak connection speeds above 100 Mbps again, with Indonesia close behind at 99.3 Mbps.

Nine of the surveyed countries saw average peak speeds increase from the second quarter, such as Indonesia (8.1 per cent), Vietnam (5.8 per cent) and New Zealand (3.8 per cent), while speeds fell 2.8 per cent in China and 8.2 per cent in Australia, for example.

For observed average connection speeds, all of the surveyed countries in the region showed year-on-year growth in the third quarter. For Singapore, the increase year-on-year was 45 per cent. Indonesia, with a 115-per-cent increase, was again the only country to see its average connection speed more than double compared with the year before.

Year on year, the global average connection speed increased 21 per cent.

Akamai processes about two trillion Web transactions daily and uses the data to publish quarterly reports on broadband connectivity and cloud security.
