Singapore must instill right skills, values in children: PM Lee

SINGAPORE — The Republic must inculcate the right skills and values in children to help them become upright citizens and members of society, even as it continues to give them a strong academic foundation.

Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said this at the 100th anniversary celebrations of Montfort Schools’ founding on Saturday (April 9). It comes after the Education Ministry announced a broad range of changes the day before, during the Committee of Supply debates in Parliament, to better recognise strengths and talents beyond exam grades.

“Build a character and inculcate in them the right values, so that they have a sense of belonging to Singapore, so that they want to help fellow Singaporeans, contribute back to society and of course to the school,” said Mr Lee. “The school should also provide the students with a broad range of experiences and encourage their interest in non-academic areas.”

Mr Lee also said he was glad that Montfort has focused on values-driven education and character development. He added that its students demonstrate exemplary behaviour and leadership even at a young age.

The event also saw the launch of the Montfort 100 Fund, a S$1 million initiative to enhance facilities and provide financial assistance, such as scholarships and bursaries for athletes and other students. S$840,000 of the total has been raised so far. CHANNEL NEWSASIA
