SINGAPORE — A Singaporean woman drowned while she was diving at sea near Tioman Island on Saturday, according to a Malaysian media report.

Ms Sim Qiu Yan, 30, had made use of the Easter long weekend to go for the diving trip with eight other Singaporeans — five men and three women — on April 17, Rompin police chief Johari Jahaya told Bernama.

She reportedly went missing at about 11.55am that day while they were diving near the island’s marine park. Ms Sim’s body was discovered at 10pm and sent to Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital for an autopsy, deputy superintendent Johari said.

When contacted, a Singapore Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesperson said it has not been approached for assistance for this incident.

According to other Malaysian reports, Ms Sim attained her diving licence only earlier this year.

The accident was attributed to the low visibility in the waters.

Ms Sim’s body is believed to have been brought back to the Republic.
