SINGAPORE — Singapore citizens who have not checked their particulars in the revised registers of electors are reminded to do so by next Monday (March 9) before the registers are certified for use in future elections.

The revised registers contain the names of all qualified electors as of Feb 1. To be an elector, the person must be a Singapore citizen and 21 years old and above as of Feb 1, and not disqualified as an elector under any written law. The person must also have a Singapore residential address on his NRIC as of Feb 1.

If the person is residing overseas and has changed his NRIC address to an overseas address, he must have a contact address in Singapore that he has registered with the Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) as of 1 Feb.

The Elections Department issued the reminder today (March 4). The registers were opened for public inspection last Tuesday (Feb 24) after it was revised to bring it up to date.

Citizens may check their particulars online at the Elections Department website using their SingPass account, or in person with their NRIC or passport at community centres or clubs, the Elections Department, or Singapore overseas missions that serve as overseas registration stations.

Claims and objections

During the inspection period, a person may submit a claim to include his name (if it has been omitted) or update his particulars (name, gender, NRIC address, etc.) in the registers. A person may also submit an objection to remove a name from the revised register of electors that contains his name.

Singaporeans who had their names removed for failing to vote at a previous election may apply to have their names restored to the registers so that they can vote at future elections.

Registration as overseas elector

Overseas Singaporeans, whose names are listed in the registers of electors and have resided in Singapore for an aggregate of at least 30 days during the three-year period between Feb 1, 2012, and Jan 31 this year, may apply to register as overseas electors to vote at one of the designated overseas polling stations in future elections.

With the revision of the registers of electors, overseas Singaporeans who had registered earlier as overseas electors will need to re-register if they meet the qualifying criteria as of 1 Feb 2015 and wish to remain as overseas electors.

All claims and objections have to be raised within the inspection period by 9 March 2015.

Non-voters who would like to restore the names to the registers and overseas Singaporeans who wish to register as overseas electors are encouraged to do so early as applications will close once the Writ of Election is issued.

Correction: In an earlier version of this story, it was reported that all claims and objections are encouraged to be filed as soon as possible as applications will close with the issuance of the Writ of Election. This is incorrect. All claims and objections have to be raised within the inspection period by 9 March 2015.

Non-voters who would like to restore the names to the registers and overseas Singaporeans who wish to register as overseas electors are encouraged to do so early as applications will close once the Writ of Election is issued. We are sorry for the error.
