SINGAPORE — Mobile users would be able to use their mobile numbers to securely top up their stored value cards, stream video content, read news, buy travel services and make mobile payments some time “later this year”.

In a joint release issued by M1, Singtel and Starhub on Friday (April 28), the three major telcos announced that EZ-Link, Fox, HungryGoWhere, NETS, Singapore Press Holdings, Singtel Dash and WTS Travel are the first service providers to have come on board the new Mobile Connect platform.

Announced last Nov, the single log-in authentication method allows consumers to use their mobile phone number to log in to various online accounts on participating websites.

Mobile Connect, which was developed by GSM Association – a trade body for mobile operators worldwide, has already been launched by 52 operators in 29 countries.

To allay concerns about customers’ privacy, the telcos said a unique personal code will secure access to services that require greater levels of security. No information would be given to service providers without their consent.

No firm date, however, was given on when the service will be available. When asked, the telcos said “later this year”.
