SINGAPORE — The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has directed SMRT to provide a “full report” on this morning’s (Jan 20) disruption on the North-South Line, which affected some 19,000 passengers.

The report should include the recovery measures carried out and an assessment on what more could be done to help commuters adjust their travel plans, said the LTA, highlighting the “inconvenience” caused to commuters. The LTA will also independently carry out an investigation on this incident, added the authority.

Train services between Sembawang to Marina Bay MRT stations were delayed for about 90 minutes this morning due to a fault on a south-bound train. A signal fault had caused a trip at about 8.10am. The automatic train protection kicked in and service brakes were applied to stop the trains. This caused the train stall about 500 metres from Ang Mo Kio station.

SMRT then deployed a 12-car rescue operation to push the stalled train into Ang Mo Kio station. At about 8.54am, the train reached the station and about 1,800 passengers alighted.

Free bus and shuttle services were offered between Woodlands and Bishan MRT stations from about 8.30am to 9.40am.
