Solemn farewell for Traffic Police officer killed in line of duty

SINGAPORE – Police officers turned out in force on Friday (June 2) to honour Staff Sergeant (SSG) Nadzrie Matin, who was killed in the line of duty in an accident along Serangoon road. 

The Traffic Police (TP) officer was performing traffic patrol duties in Little India when his motorcycle collided with a van at 10.40am on Thursday. The 29-year-old later died from his injuries. The van's driver, 52, has been arrested.

Nadzrie’s body arrived at his home in Choa Chu Kang at about 12:20pm for prayers. He was subsequently accorded a police ceremonial burial, watched on by hundreds of friends and family members who gathered to bid him a final farewell.

Law and Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam, who visited Nadzrie’s family on Friday afternoon, described him as a promising Home Team officer who was “courageous and charged with a strong sense of justice”. 

“We have lost a fine young man, a husband and a son – and a true son of Singapore," Mr Shanmugam wrote in a Facebook post. "He will be missed and remembered by many. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.” 

Nadzrie had signed on with the Singapore Police Force after his National Service. He was attached to various Neighbourhood Police Centres before taking on a posting at the Traffic Police.

He received a Good Service Medal in 2015 and rose to the rank of SSG a year ago. 

Parliamentary Secretary Amrin Amin, who was also present at the funeral, said: “SSG Nadzrie served as a police officer till his last breath. For your loyalty and service, thank you!”
