S’pore extends its condolences

Singaporean leaders wrote to their Italian counterparts yesterday to convey their sympathies over the devastating earthquake in central Italy.

In his letter to President Sergio Mattarella, President Tony Tan Keng Yam said that he was deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life and widespread destruction caused by the earthquake in central Italy on Wednesday.

“On behalf of the people of Singapore, I would like to extend my deepest condolences to the families of those who perished in the disaster. I wish for the speedy recovery of those who were injured,” said Mr Tan.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Italy during this difficult period”.

For his part, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong also wrote to Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, saying that he was saddened to learn of the earthquake. 241 people have been killed, and rescue efforts are continuing.

“On behalf of the Government and people of Singapore, I would like to convey my deepest sympathies to the bereaved families and those affected by the disaster,” said Mr Lee.

“Our thoughts are with the people of Italy during this time.”
