S’pore ranks No 1 in LTE speeds, 6th in coverage globally

SINGAPORE — Smartphone users in Singapore enjoy the fastest LTE speeds in the world, although in terms of coverage, there is still some way to go. According to OpenSignal’s latest global State of the LTE report, the average speed of LTE in Singapore is 37Mbps, way ahead of the runner-up New Zealand which clocked in at 29Mbps.

However, in terms of LTE coverage, Singapore ranked 6th in the world with 81 per cent. South Korea is the leader with 97 per cent coverage, followed by Japan (90 per cent) and Hong Kong (86 per cent). OpenSignal defines LTE coverage — or rather, LTE "time coverage" — as the proportion of time users spend connected to a network.

Among Singapore’s telcos, Singtel is the reigning world speed champion with an average speed of 40Mbps while rival StarHub came in a close second at 39Mbps. M1’s average speed of 29Mbps, however, placed it just outside the global top 10 list.

In terms of coverage, Singtel ranked 9th globally with users getting an LTE signal 86 per cent of the time while M1 came in at 23rd place with 82 per cent. Bringing up the rear was StarHub with 79 per cent coverage to take 34th place. South Korea’s LGT placed first, providing a “near ubiquitous” 4G signal to the country’s mobile market at 99.6 per cent.

Both South Korea and Singapore were singled out for praise by the report. “Some countries like South Korea and Singapore have managed to build networks unrivaled in both technology and reliability... (The two countries) have set themselves apart from the main body of global operators, providing both superior coverage and speed,” said OpenSignal.

OpenSignal collects its data from smartphone owners through an app which constantly monitors the coverage and performance of their mobile connections. For this report, they compiled data from 357,924 OpenSignal Android users with LTE-capable phones connected to 4G operators between Oct 1 and Dec 31.
