SINGAPORE — A 28-year-old Singaporean man has been charged with importing more than 500g of cannabis, a controlled drug, without authorisation.

Mohamad Aiman Asmi was charged at the State Courts today (Dec 19). His wife, who is six months pregnant, was seen weeping among family members who attended the hearing before district Judge May Mesenas.

The 28-year-old Singaporean had allegedly tried to import the drug from Malaysia. He was found out at the Woodlands Checkpoint on Dec 13 at 1.20am, with 917.87g of vegetable matter believed to contain more than 500g of cannabis in his motor vehicle. His defence argued that the items seized from the vehicle were for Mohamad Aiman’s own consumption.

The Health Sciences Authority (HSA) will deliver a report determining the exact quantity of cannabis found within the vegetable matter by Jan 13. If found guilty of possessing more than 500g of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking, Mohamad Aiman could face a death sentence. He will appear before the court again on Dec 26 at 2.30pm.
