Stage 2 of Downtown Line to open in first quarter 2016

SINGAPORE - Downtown Line 2 (DTL2), which runs through the Bukit Timah corridor, is set to open in the first quarter of 2016.

SINGAPORE - Downtown Line 2 (DTL2), which runs through the Bukit Timah corridor, is set to open in the first quarter of 2016.

Construction of DTL2, scheduled to complete by the end of 2015, had to be delayed when main contractor Alpine Bau went bust last year.

“LTA and all the contractors will continue to work hard to recover more of the time and bring forward the opening to even earlier than first quarter of 2016 ... many of them have been working round the clock, seven days a week. But all these acceleration must be done without compromising safety standards,” said Transport Minister Lui Tuck Yew this morning (Sept 29), at a site visit to Bukit Panjang station.

LTA said measures have been put in place to speed up works and save time. For example, a control station has been set up at Little India station so that basic testing for some of the stations can be carried out earlier.

DTL2, the second of three phases in the Downtown Line, comprises 12 stations and one depot, including four interchange stations.

When completed, the entire Downtown Line will be about 42km long with 34 stations, and is estimated to serve half a million commuters daily.
