SINGAPORE — The late Mr S R Nathan was laid to rest on Friday afternoon (Aug 26) , four days after he died. He was 92.

A State Funeral Procession began at 2pm, when Mr Nathan’s cortege made its way from Parliament House where his body had been lying in state from Thursday, to the University Cultural Centre (UCC) where the State Funeral Service was held. The Procession passed landmarks of significance to the former statesman, such as City Hall, Fullerton Hotel and NTUC Centre.

Seven eulogies were delivered, including one by Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, at the funeral service.

Other than family members, guests at the State Funeral Service included President Tony Tan, Cabinet ministers, members of Parliament, the Judiciary, the diplomatic corps, and Singaporeans from all walks of life.

Since Thursday, thousands of people from politicians, grassroots and community leaders, as well as ordinary Singaporeans turned up at Parliament House to pay their last respects to the late Mr Nathan.

Some had arrived at Parliament House before 7am and were among the first in line to pay their respects. By around mid-day Thursday, the queue to enter Parliament House extended to almost three hours.

But, as Mr Sata S, 48, a service engineer who was among the early birds in the queue said, he wanted “to pay respects to the man who has done so much to the country”.
