SINGAPORE — A 16-year-old student from Chong Boon Secondary School, Benjamin Sim, collapsed and died after completing a 2.4km run during physical education lesson in school on Tuesday morning (Aug 1).

The Singapore Civil Defence Force said it received a call for assistance at 8.15am and dispatched a fire bike and an ambulance to the school at Ang Mo Kio Street 44.

The caller, who was unidentified, was administering cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on the Chinese male student.
Arriving around nine minutes later, paramedics noticed that the student was unconscious, and took over the CPR.

The student was subsequently sent to Tan Tock Seng Hospital, where the medical team was alerted to be on standby. He was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

In a statement, the school's principal, Mr Yeo Kuerk Heng, said that the school was "deeply saddened" by Sim's death.

"He collapsed after completing a run during a Physical Education (PE) lesson in school, and immediate assistance was rendered," he said. "His parents were informed and Benjamin was taken to hospital by ambulance."

"Benjamin was well-regarded and popular among his peers, and was especially known for his cheerful and friendly disposition," Mr Yeo added. "He participated actively in class and in his Volleyball CCA. He was also good in English and helped his friends weaker in the subject."

According to him, school leaders, staff and counsellors are providing emotional support and assistance to Sim’s family, affected students and staff.

His father, Mr Davy Sim, who is a senior pastor at the Singapore Bible Baptist Church, according to his LinkedIn page, confirmed the incident in a Facebook post on Tuesday evening.

The post has received more than 400 messages of condolence.

"Our deepest condolences to you Ptr. Davy Sim and wife. We are very sorry to hear this. May the Lord's comfort and strength be upon you and your wife," wrote a Facebook user; while another wrote: "My deepest sympathy and condolences pastor. Praying for you all who are bereaving for comfort. God bless!"

The police are investigating the incident as a case of unnatural death.
