Tampines East launches community exercise push

SINGAPORE — Tampines East residents can look forward to more programmes and activities to stay fit and healthy, as well as foster community bonding.

SINGAPORE — Tampines East residents can look forward to more programmes and activities to stay fit and healthy, as well as foster community bonding.

Channel NewsAsia looked at these initiatives ahead of the ministerial visit of the ward by Minister Grace Fu on Jan 18.

The Active Tampines programme encourages a sustainable healthy lifestyle for its residents. The area’s Member of Parliament (MP), Mr Mah Bow Tan, said the programmes are geared to the needs of everyone in the constituency.

Said Mr Mah: “Our focus is two things. First of all to keep our residents active and healthy but at the same time also to foster bonding between the different communities, also within the family. That’s the reason why in all the things that we do we have these two objectives in mind.”

Mr Mah said senior citizens can stay active by playing games, dancing, or mending the community garden, and youths can take part in its Community Sports Programme supported by billionaire Peter Lim.

Residents are also urged to help the less fortunate, so as to foster community bonding. A donation drive is organised once a month to distribute food to lower-income households.

Mr Mah said more multi-generational programmes and activities will also be developed, such as the three-in-one Family Centre, where young and old can interact. CHANNEL NEWSASIA
