SINGAPORE — Technology companies in the Silicon Valley like Facebook, Google and Apple hold Singapore in high regard even though Singapore does not have a hinterland and a low-cost environment, said Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, as he joined residents of Teck Ghee for a Chinese New Year dinner on Saturday evening (Feb 20).

“It’s a place where they have good business, where Singaporeans work hard, where the Government is effective, the infrastructure is good, Changi Airport is good. And so we’re here and they’re creating jobs for us and prosperity for us,” said PM Lee, who just returned from a trip to San Francisco.

Mr Lee said he also tossed yusheng, a traditional Chinese New Year salad, with Singaporeans living in San Francisco. He said many are doing well in their career and studies, and this reflects well on Singapore.

The Prime Minister added that they will be able to come back and contribute to Singapore’s society and economy.

Mr Lee also pointed out that Singapore has already changed from year to year, in areas such as public housing, healthcare services and schools. He said efforts should continue to make sure Singapore remains a nation of opportunity, with a liveable and endearing home.

He said it should be something that all Singaporeans value and celebrate together.

“Whether it’s Chinese New Year, whether it’s Christmas, whether it’s Hari Raya or Deepavali, we celebrate and we have something valuable to celebrate; a good reason to say we’ve done well. We work hard, and next year will be even better. This year is the Year of the Monkey. The monkey is always thinking of new things to do, finding a higher branch to climb, another fruit to pluck. And I think we should be like that too. If we are like that, then I think we have a bright future,” he said. CHANNEL NEWSASIA
