Tertiary award for Nee Soon East students at local private universities

SINGAPORE — From next August, tertiary students studying full-time at a local private university and living in Nee Soon East can tap on an award for their tuition fees, announced MP for Nee Soon GRC Patrick Tay at an Edusave awards presentation.

A total of 1,504 Edusave awards, worth about S$505,000, will be handed out to students over five sessions beginning from today (Dec 28).

Mr Tay said the Nee Soon East Citizens’ Consultative Committee (CCC) came up with the tertiary award following feedback from residents.

The total projected quantum for the tertiary award for next year is $29,000 for 10 students.

Part of the funding will come from the government, while the remainder will be raised by grassroots leaders.

Mr Tay said: “This tertiary award is a first of its kind, inaugural for the community by the community. The CCC has raised funds so that this tertiary award will benefit many of our full-time undergraduate students living in Nee Soon East, but studying in locally-run private universities such as in SIM Global, the UOL or RMIT programme. This will help to ease their financial burden and also help them to move up the career ladder through the private university education.” CHANNEL NEWSASIA
