Thousands participate in anti-racism event

SINGAPORE - Over 5,000 participants took part in what’s called a “Race Against Racism” at the Marina Bay Sands today (Aug 16).

It was part of the annual Orange Ribbon Run, the only running event that encourages Singaporeans to stand against racial prejudice.

The race saw close to 2,000 youths, mostly secondary school students, taking part - a huge jump from the 300 who participated last year. It was organised by OnePeople.sg - an organisation which promotes racial harmony.

Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office S Iswaran graced the event, saying there are diverse opinions in today’s environment. However, he warned that such voices, which are further amplified by social media, should not disrupt the peace Singapore has worked hard to build.

“As we engage each other across these different viewpoints, we must always be civil, maintain mutual respect, and be resolute in our stand against any form of prejudice. The many moderate voices amongst us must stand up and be counted, in the real world and in cyberspace, to deter extreme views and to make sure our united stand against racism and prejudices remains resolute,” said Mr Iswaran.
