Will public transport fares be raised?

Public Transport Operators must submit applications to review transport fares by today, if they wish to revise fares. The Public Transport Council announced last month that it had started its annual fare review exercise, and SMRT had indicated its plans to apply for a review. Under last year’s fare review exercise, commuters had to pay between 4 cents and 20 cents more for bus or train fares, starting from April. Overall, fares for buses and trains went up by 3.2 per cent this year.

Secondary school posting

Students will find out today which secondary school they have been posted to, with the release of the Secondary One Posting Exercise. Students are to report to the secondary schools they are posted to on Monday, Dec 22 at 8.30am.

US-Cuba relations

Attention continues to be focused on the developments around the US-Cuba decision to renew relations and how it could affect trade with the US and Cuba’s development. The political fallout is also being watched as Republicans initially were against the deal, but, because of trade implications, many are also saying it was about time the US made the move. Potential US presidential candidates are also jumping into the fight.

Pakistan school massacre

Pakistan’s army chief has already travelled to Afghanistan to open talks with leaders there to assist Pakistan in bringing to justice the militants involved in leading or backing the operation that killed more than 130 children. TODAY will continue to monitor developments arising from the slaughter in Pakistan by the Taliban and its knock-on effects in Afghanistan, where many Pakistani Taliban militants are believe to be residing.

Fall of the rouble

TODAY will continue to monitor the fall of the rouble and its effects on Russia, the power of President Vladimir Putin and also how Russia will react and could it reach a deal to ease up on Ukraine and thus get out from under US and EU sanctions.

Sony hack

The hack of Sony Corp’s studio computers has been attributed to North Korea. What are the effects on the film industry? Sony’s decision to withdraw the film The Interview has led to accusations the film studio is appeasing terrorists and has given up on the fight for free speech. This has led to questions over the leadership of the studio and possible deals that may be pulled in light of the studio’s withdrawal of the film.

Swimming championships

Day 4 of the 10th Yakult Singapore National Swimming Championships at the OCBC Aquatic Centre where more of the Republic’s swimmers are making their bids not just for a national title but also to qualify for the 28th South-east Asian Games that will be held here in June.
