First hearing related to govt’s 1MDB probe

The Supreme Court will hear the first case here related to the Government’s probe into bank accounts possibly linked to Malaysian state fund 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) today. Banker Yak Yew Chee is understood have filed an application seeking access to his bank accounts which were frozen during investigations. He is said to be employed by wealthy Malaysian financier Low Taek Jho — also known as Jho Low — who is reportedly involved in personal transactions with 1MDB.

Najib to visit Kedah

Malaysia’s Prime Minister Najib Razak will make a working visit to the northern state of Kedah today and meet with the state’s new Chief Minister Ahmad Bashah Md Hanipah. Mr Bashah replaced Mr Mukhriz Mahathir, after the latter was forced to step down on Wednesday as he had lost majority support in the legislative assembly. Mr Najib’s trip, taking place a day after Mr Bashah was sworn in as Chief Minister, will be seen as an endorsement of the latter’s leadership.

UN suspends peace talks

Peace remains elusive in war-torn Syria as the United Nations suspended peace talks between the Syrian government and a coalition of opposition groups early yesterday. Russia, an ally of Syrian President Bashar Assad, has made clear that it has no intention of suspending airstrikes against the rebels, despite repeated requests by Washington for Moscow to stop the bombing.
