Rui En returns to court

Actress Rui En will return to court on Friday, where she is expected to plead guilty to one count of careless driving after she hit a stationary motorcycle at a Clementi open-air car park in April. The 35-year-old is accused of failing to keep proper control of her vehicle, a BMW, and mounting a road kerb and collided head-on with a stationary motorcycle. The incident had caused an uproar after the owner of the motorcycle claimed she asked if he knew who she was, when he confronted her. If convicted of driving without due care or reasonable consideration, she could be jailed up to six months and/or fined up to S$1,000.

Yang Yin returns to court

Former tour guide Yang Yin is expected to return to court on Friday, this time to be tried over two counts of criminal breach of trust for allegedly misappropriating S$1.1 million from 89-year-old widow Chung Khin Chun. In May, the 42-year-old Chinese national pleaded guilty to a slew of criminal charges, including falsifying receipts amounting to S$186,900, and for immigration and cheating offences.

Last day of campaigning for Australian federal election

Friday marks the last day of campaigning for the Australian federal election. Voters hold the leaders of the two major parties in disdain, with polls showing Mr Malcolm Turnbull, leader of the right-wing Liberal Party, and Mr Bill Shorten, leader of the opposition Labor Party, faced with historically low support. Discontent with the establishment appears to be driving voters to the fringes, with the smaller parties poised to make gains.

Hong Kong’s 19th anniversary of handover from British to Chinese rule

Pro-democracy activists are expected to take the streets of Hong Kong today (FRI) as the city marks the 19th anniversary of its handover from British to Chinese rule. Tens of thousands of Hong Kongers took the streets on July 1 last year in an annual protest march for full democracy, as discontent grows over how Beijing has diminished the “high degree of autonomy” promised when Hong Kong was returned to China in 1997.

Euro 2016: Belgium vs Wales

After their 4-0 trouncing of Hungary in the Round of 16 at Euro 2016, Belgium are suddenly regarded as contenders for the title once again. But the country’s Golden Generation of players, which includes Eden Hazard, Romelu Lukaku and Thibaut Cortouis, face a tough hurdle in Wales (Saturday morning, 3am). Gareth Bale’s side have always been problematic for the Belgians, holding them to a 0-0 draw, and beating them 1-0 in their last two encounters.
