Yang Yin case

The case against former tour guide Yang Yin is set to be mentioned in State Courts again today (Dec 18). Yang already faces a total of 334 charges, for falsification of accounts for his company and for immigration offences. Separately, he has been sued by the niece of wealthy widow Chung Khin Chun for damages arising from his alleged breach of duties under Mdm Chung’s Lasting Power of Attorney.

N-Level results

The results of the 2014 Singapore-Cambridge General Certificate of Education Normal (Academic) and Normal (Technical) Level Examinations will be released today (Dec 18). School candidates may obtain their result slips from their respective schools from 2.00 pm.

Peshawar massacre

Following an attack by Taliban militants on a school in the city of Peshawar on Tuesday, where 132 students were killed, Pakistan Army Chief General Raheel Sharif flew to Kabul on a surprise visit yesterday (Wednesday). The purpose of the visit was to discuss ways of combating the Taliban. All eyes will be on whether there will be a strong crack down on the militants, and if there will be changes in Pakistan-Afghanistan dynamics as they find ways of dealing with a common threat despite their differences.

Sydney Siege

Australia continues to come to terms with the hostage crisis on Monday, as more details emerge from witnesses accounts. PM Tony Abbott has called for a sweeping investigation on why the security system failed to put gunman Man Haron Monis under surveillance. Further reviews of Australia’s security system are expected.

European Council meeting

EU leaders start a two-day summit in Brussels. Issues to be discussed include support for Ukraine, policy toward Russia, the EU economy and budget, and a proposed investment programme.
