Australia continues to plead for citizens’ lives

Australia’s foreign minister appealed to Indonesia’s president yesterday (Feb 25) to show mercy for two Australian drug traffickers due to be executed in Indonesia, expressing disappointment that their latest legal appeal had been rejected. President Joko Widodo has denied clemency to 11 convicts on death row, including the Australian nationals, ratcheting up diplomatic tensions amid repeated pleas for mercy. Indonesia’s attorney general said yesterday the executions, to be carried out by firing squads, would not be delayed or cancelled in the face of diplomatic pressure, but declined to specify a date. The executions could come at any time and could lead to a rift in Australian-Indonesia relations.

The move could have spillover effects on international providers as well.

The pair clashed in a profanity-laced exchange courtside over tactical instructions during Tuesday’s game against the Toronto Raptors, although Dallas owner Mark Cuban has attempted to play down the incident. Dallas have won nine of their last 12 games, but their team cohesiveness will be tested by an Atlanta side buoyed by their win over the Milwaukee Bucks on Sunday.

Weather forecast
