GE2015: Six rallies tonight

There will be six rallies tonight, with the PAP holding two – in East Coast and Pasir Ris-Punggol GRCs. The Workers’ Party is holding its second rally in a row, but this time in Jalan Besar GRC. The Singapore Democratic Party will be holding its maiden rally for Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC. Similarly so for Singaporeans First Party, which is holding its rally for Jurong GRC. Meanwhile, independent candidate Han Hui Hui is also holding a rally in Radin Mas SMC. All the rallies start at 7pm.

GE2015: Parties’ political broadcasts on radio, TV

From 8pm onwards, free-to-air television channels and radio stations will be playing the various parties’ political broadcast for GE2015. Political parties that field at least six candidates under a recognised party symbol are eligible for air-time. The allocation of air time is determined by the number of candidates fielded by the party. The parties will be making their second political broadcasts on Sept 10.

China’s WWII commemoration parade

All eyes are on Beijing today as it holds a massive military parade to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II. More than 10,000 troops, mostly Chinese but with contingents from Russia, Mongolia and a few other countries will march through central Beijing. Among the statesmen in attendance include Russian President Vladimir Putin and South Korean President Park Geun-hye. Former Deputy Prime Minister Wong Kan Seng will be Singapore’s special envoy for the event

Europe refugee crisis

Europe is facing an unprecedented refugee crisis as hundreds of migrants poured onto the high-speed railway tracks linking Paris and London, stranding thousands of passengers in darkness for hours aboard Eurostar trains. In Budapest, an angry crowd is camped outside the train station demanding to board trains for Germany, as Europe’s asylum system struggles to process the applications.

Weather forecast

Hazy conditions in Singapore are expected to continue today, with the 24-hour Pollutant Standards Index (PSI) expected to be in the high end of the moderate range, according to the National Environment Agency. Showers are expected mainly over northern and western Singapore in the afternoon. Temperatures will likely range between 26°C and 34°C.
