The man who sauntered onto the track during last month’s Singapore Grand Prix will have his case mentioned in court again today. Yogvitam Pravin Dhokia, 27, faces the charge of committing a rash act that endangered the safety of drivers in the race. If convicted, he could be jailed up to six months and fined up to S$2,500.
Attention turns to ratification of TPP
After more than five years of negotiations, the landmark Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) economic pact covering 40 per cent of global output was completed yesterday. Attention will now turn to the ratification of the treaty. Among the impediments that will need to be overcome is a sceptical American Congress.
NATO Secretary General to speak on Russia’s bombing of Syria
North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg will hold a press conference today in Brussels, where he is expected to take a strong position against Russia’s bombing of Syria. Moscow has entered the fray in the four-year civil war but the US-led international coalition has expressed concern that the Russian operations have been directed at opponents of Syrian President Bashar Assad rather than the Islamic State militants.
Nobel Prize physics winner to be announced
The Nobel Prize winner for physics will be announced today. Yesterday, three scientists from Japan, China and Ireland — Dr William Campbell, Dr Satoshi Omura and Dr Tu Youyou — won the Nobel Prize for Medicine. Their discoveries led to the development of potent new drugs against parasitic diseases including malaria and elephantiasis.
