South Korea hosts submarine military exercise

South Korea is hosting a 10-day multi-lateral submarine exercise on Wednesday with six Pacific nations including the United States, Japan and Australia. Aimed at enhancing the combined capabilities and inter-operability of the multi-lateral navies in submarine rescue operations, drills will be held to improve techniques in rescuing crewmen from stranded submarines. Another 12 countries, including China and Russia, will participate as observers.

S’pore defence minister heads to Laos for Asean Defence Ministers’ Meeting

Singapore’s Minister for Defence Dr Ng Eng Hen will be in Laos on Wednesday to attend the the 10th Association of South-east Asian (Asean) Defence Ministers’ Meeting (ADMM) and the Asean-China Defence Ministers’ Informal Meeting. Established in 2006, the ADMM is an important platform in Asean’s security architecture to facilitate open and constructive dialogue on regional security issues at the ministerial level, as well as building capacities in areas such as peacekeeping, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief. To mark the 10th anniversary of the ADMM, the 10 Defence Ministers will attend a tree planting ceremony on Thursday.

President Obama wraps up Vietnam visit

United States President Barack Obama concludes his trip to Vietnam on Wednesday by hosting a townhall meeting with members of the Young South-east Asian Leaders Initiative. He will speak and take questions from young Vietnamese, before flying off later to attend the Group of Seven (G7) Summit in Japan.

The Asian Festival of Children’s Content kicks off

Organised by the National Book Development Council of Singapore (NBDCS), this festival aims to celebrate and promote the creation and appreciation of children’s books and content, with a focus on Asian themes. This year, the five-day festival at the National Library Building will feature 140 ticketed sessions including seminars, workshops, performances, and the AFCC Book Fair. Japan is the Country of Focus for AFCC 2016, and will have highlight events such as Japan Night and the exhibition, The History Of Japanese Picture Books, featured.
