British State Opening of Parliament to be held

The British State Opening of Parliament takes place today (May 27), during which the legislative programme of Prime Minister David Cameron’s government will be unveiled following the Conservative Party’s May 7 election victory. The programme will include the framework for a referendum on staying in the European Union or leaving the bloc by the end of 2017 after a renegotiation of membership terms. The government’s Scotland Bill will also be keenly watched by the influx of new Scottish National Party members.

China’s White Paper heightens tensions over South China Sea

Tensions over the disputed South China Sea have heightened after China released a White Paper to boost its naval reach and held a ground-breaking ceremony for two lighthouses in the disputed waters. In the new policy document, China vowed to use both offensive and defensive measures to protect the open seas and also made clear its criticisms of neighbours who take “provocative actions” on its reefs and islands. It remains to be seen if Beijing’s latest actions will elicit a pushback from the other South China Sea claimants and Washington, who want to uphold freedom of navigation in the waters.

Yusof Ishak Secondary School to launch nationwide trail

Yusof Ishak Secondary School, named after Singapore’s first President, will launch a nationwide trail today which features sites that commemorate the various presidents’ contributions to the country, as well as lend insights into their personal lives. The sites were chosen based on the students’ research at the National Archives of Singapore and interviews with people close to them.

Tin Pei Ling to hold dialogue with NUS students

Member of Parliament (Marine Parade GRC) Tin Pei Ling will hold a dialogue with National University of Singapore students at its U@live forum tonight. The youngest parliamentarian in the House is expected to touch on her political career so far, including the flak she got early on from those who perceived her as immature.
