SINGAPORE — Train service on the North-South Line (NSL) was disrupted for about two hours today (July 3) during the morning peak period due to a track fault.

Operator SMRT said passengers began experiencing delays from 7.21am due to a track circuit fault between Woodlands and Admiralty Stations, resulting in trains slowing down in both directions. Normal train services resumed at 9.25am, it added but did not respond to queries on the number of commuters affected.

Posting on Twitter at around 8am, SMRT alerted commuters travelling from Choa Chu Kang to Admiralty towards Marina South Pier that they should factor in an additional 15 minutes’ travelling time. Free bus services were provided between Yew Tee and Toa Payoh, it added in a subsequent post.

SMRT said it sent staff to manage the build-up of commuters on affected station platforms and through the fare gates at stations between Yew Tee and Ang Mo Kio.

Station announcements, complemented by Twitter updates, kept commuters updated on the situation, it added.

Ms Lim Yee Ping, 32, a secretary, was one of those caught in the disruption. She told TODAY she had to wait 40 minutes to board the train at Yishun at 7.50am.

SMRT customer service staff gave them late slips stating the reason for the delay, but not all got one, she added.

Republic Polytechnic student Don Yeo said he was 20 minutes late for his examination after taking the train from Choa Chu Kang at 8.20am. “It kept stopping halfway and moving very slowly. I ended up taking 40 minutes instead of the usual 10 to 15 minutes,” he added.

The last disruption on the NSL occurred on Feb 27, when a man climbed onto the track between Choa Chu Kang and Bukit Gombak stations. Between February and March this year, five disruptions in nine days plagued the SMRT rail network.
