Traffic Police theory, practical test fees to go up from June 1

SINGAPORE — Those intending to get a driving licence will soon have to pay more to take the Traffic Police’s theory and practical tests.

SINGAPORE — Those intending to get a driving licence will soon have to pay more to take the Traffic Police’s theory and practical tests.

From next month, the test fee for the Basic Driving Theory Test, Final Driving Theory Test and Motorcycle Riding Theory Test will be increased from S$6.00 to S$6.50, the Singapore Police Force announced in a statement today (May 29). The test fee for the Practical Riding Test, Practical Driving Test, and Proficiency Driving Test will also be increased from S$20 to S$26 on June 1 and to S$33 on June 1 next year.

The fee revision will apply to people who book their theory tests, practical tests, or Proficiency Driving Test on or after June 1. Those who have done so before will not be affected.

Noting that the current test fees have been in place since 1997, the police said the increase was due to the rise in operating costs over the years.

Today, the police also announced that changes to the requirement for Work Permit and S-Pass holders who wish to convert their foreign driving licences to a Class 3 licence will take effect from June 1.

These motorists will have to pass the Class 3 Practical Driving Test on top of the Basic Theory Test, which will then allow them to drive all Class 3 vehicles including light goods vehicles and small buses. These changes were passed in Parliament in September last year.

Two new licences will also be introduced from next month — Class 3C and Class 3CA. The Class 3C licence will allow the holder to drive all Class 3 vehicles except light goods vehicles, mini vans and small buses. Drivers need to pass only the Basic Theory Test to convert their foreign driving licence to the Class 3C licence. The Class 3CA licence is only for automatic Class 3C vehicles.

To give drivers with a Class 3 licence time to take the Class 3 Practical Driving Test, a two-year transition period from June 1 this year to 31 May 2017 will be implemented.
