SINGAPORE — A tipper truck driver has been arrested by the police in relation to the six-vehicle traffic accident that caused the death of a motorcyclist this morning (April 9).

Mr Soh Choon Seng, 59, who works for Boon Poh Refuse Disposal, was arrested for the accident that occurred at the junction of Ang Mo Kio Ave 6 and Marymount Road. The accident involved the truck, the motorcycle, a lorry , a bus and two cars at about 9.49am.

Mr Soh earlier told TODAY that the accident happened because his brakes failed and he could not stop the truck in time. Hence, the heavy vehicle ploughed into the two cars, the motorcycle and the bus that had stopped in front of him at the traffic light on Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 on the left most lane of the four-lane road.

The impact caused a mangled mess of vehicles, crushing one of the cars, the motorcycle and the motorcyclist between the bus and the tipper truck. The other car, which was in front of the bus, was spun by the impact into the right side of the bus. Mr Soh said the small lorry was at the side.

Mr Soh said his vehicle is fitted with a speed limiter for 60km/h. He said in Mandarin that the traffic light had already turned red so he had been slowing down. He estimated that he had been travelling at 20-30km/h.

Police said four people were conveyed to Tan Tock Seng Hospital and the motorcyclist was pronounced dead by paramedics at scene. Three of those sent to the hospital were discharged as of 3pm while the fourth was warded and was being assessed by doctors.
