Trust in public institutions top issue for Parliament on Monday

SINGAPORE — The issue of trust and confidence in public institutions is expected to dominate the next sitting of Parliament on Monday.

A total of 88 questions have been filed by Members of Parliament for oral answers during the session.

Mr Hri Kumar Nair, Chairman of the Government Parliamentary Committee for Home Affairs and Law and MP for Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC, wants to know whether the Government is taking any steps to address the issue of confidence in the country’s public institutions.

Mr Zaqy Mohamad, MP for Chua Chu Kang GRC, wants to know about the measures taken to ensure adequate oversight over enforcement units.

Seven questions have been tabled on the recent Auditor-General’s report, which revealed several lapses in government departments.

Mr Pritam Singh, MP for Aljunied GRC, wants to know whether the Government will immediately direct a thorough one-off audit of all ministries and statutory boards, with specific emphasis on procurement-related transactions.

There are also questions tabled on complaints of child abuse at kindergartens and childcare centres, and the recent case where a senior prison officer was convicted of causing the death of an inmate by a negligent act

Two Bills will be debated during their second reading. These are the Terrorism (Suppression of Financing) (Amendment) Bill and the Status of Children (Assisted Reproduction Technology) Bill.
