Unearthing early treasures
An archaeological excavation — the largest undertaken in Singapore — being carried out at a site in front of the Victoria Theatre and Concert Hall at Empress Place. So far, archaeologists have managed to haul up around 400kg of artefacts, some dating as far back as the 14th century. The site is more than 1,000 sq m in size — about the equivalent of 10 four-room HDB flats. Organised by the National Heritage Board, the excavation, which began on Feb 2, is part of its efforts to commemorate 31 years of archaeology in Singapore.PHOTO: ROBIN CHOO
