SINGAPORE — Come 2018, Hougang residents will have a bigger community club, with a new daycare centre for seniors. Announcing this at the constituency’s National Day dinner yesterday, Hougang grassroots adviser Lee Hong Chuang said the upgraded space, costing an estimated S$700,000, will have an additional fourth level.

The basketball court will have a shelter so that people can continue playing at the court and various classes can be held “rain or shine,” said Mr Lee, who promised more services to cater for residents of all ages. Renovation will commence in the next three months.

So far, more than half of the required funding has been raised. Proceeds from yesterday’s dinner, which cost S$10 a person and amounted to an estimated S$8,500, will be channelled to the building fund.

“We don’t just chase after big donors because every dollar counts, and we want many individuals to be involved and participate in this upgrading,” said Mr Lee, the People’s Action Party candidate for Hougang at last year’s polls.

“We especially want the residents who are staying in Hougang Constituency to be part of it.”

In his speech, he also announced that the Lift Upgrading Programme will be extended to Blocks 338 and 353 in Hougang. Already, 63 blocks have undergone the programme and these are the last two eligible blocks, said Mr Lee.

He added that another 16 to 18 blocks have been selected for the Home Improvement Programme. VALERIE KOH
