SINGAPORE - Environment and Water Resources Minister Vivian Balakrishnan and Second Minister Grace Fu will be attending the 15th Meeting of the Sub-Regional Ministerial Steering Committee on Transboundary Haze Pollution in Kuala Lumpur tomorrow (July 17).

A statement from the ministry said the ministerial-level committee, comprising Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand, oversees the implementation of enhanced measures to prevent smoke haze arising from land and forest fires in the five countries.

To make a stronger push for concrete actions, Dr Balakrishnan told Singapore’s Parliament earlier this month that he will be seeking clear deliverables from the meeting.

He said that Singapore will be urging member countries in the committee to submit their concession maps and agree to a date for the launch of a monitoring system that enables the identification of errant companies.

He will be asking Indonesia to renew the environmental collaboration between Singapore and Jambi province and expand cooperation to other provinces.

Dr Balakrishnan will also be urging Indonesia to ratify the ASEAN Transboundary Haze Pollution Agreement expeditiously. CHANNEL NEWSASIA
