Woman to be charged with making false police report

SINGAPORE — A woman will be charged in court today with making a false report to police claiming that she was grabbed by two men.

SINGAPORE — A woman will be charged in court today with making a false report to police claiming that she was grabbed by two men.

The woman, 19, made the report on Sept 6 at Choa Chu Kang Neighbourhood Police Centre. She had stated that she was grabbed by two unknown men while she was on her way to work at Sunset Way.

Officers from Jurong and Clementi Division then conducted enquiries and investigations, and the woman also led police officers to the alleged crime scene.

But after further checks and with the aid of closed circuit television footage, it was revealed that the woman’s allegations were “baseless”, said the police in a press release yesterday. She also admitted that she had lodged a false report.

The woman will be charged with the offence of providing false information to a public servant.

If convicted, she could be jailed up to one year, or fined up to S$5,000, or punished with both.

Separately, the police also shared on Facebook that another woman, 35, was being investigated for making a false report.

The woman had made a report last Sunday that a man tried to abduct her five-year-old son by pushing the pram away while she was shopping at Bukit Panjang Plaza. But officers from Jurong Division, while investigating, found inconsistencies in her account, and established that the woman had provided false information.

“The police would like to remind the public that police resources could have been put to better use in dealing with real crimes and emergencies than investigating false reports or false information,” said the police. “Those who lodge false police reports or provide false information will face serious consequences under the law.”
