SINGAPORE — The woman who died after her husband allegedly reversed his car into her on Tuesday has been identified as a senior officer at the Ministry of Manpower (MOM).

Yesterday, several present and former colleagues paid tribute to Quek-Ng Siew Fong, 64, who was a senior deputy director at MOM’s foreign manpower management division.

Writing on Facebook, Minister for Social and Family Development Tan Chuan-Jin, who helmed the ministry previously, described her as a “well-loved and respected colleague”.

“She has been a dedicated officer who actively looked out for the well-being of the workers working here. A most unfortunate and tragic accident and our thoughts are with her family during this time of bereavement,” Mr Tan said.

Commenting on Mr Tan’s post, a Facebook user by the name of Bernard Joseph Menon wrote that the civil servant was “a boss and mentor who always had the time and inclination to help and guide her younger charges”.

“I will remember Mrs Quek with fondness and gratitude. My thoughts and prayers go out to her family during this time of time of unimaginable sadness,” he added.

The accident, which happened on Tuesday night at the car park at Block 332, Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1, was first reported by The Straits Times. Quek-Ng was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital, where she succumbed to head injuries.

From eyewitness accounts, the accident happened after she got out of the car and her husband stepped on the accelerator before she closed the car door. He was believed to have been reversing into a parking lot.

Her husband, Mr Quek Chin Ling, 67, appeared to have panicked after hearing her cry out and stepped on the wrong pedal, running over her.

He reportedly hit two parked motorcycles and crashed into a pillar before the car stopped moving.

Another person at the scene told The Straits Times that the woman was bleeding badly from the head as she was lying on the ground. Mr Quek was seen squatting by her side, saying: “I hit my wife, I hit my wife.”

The 48-year-old owner of an eyewear shop, who gave his name as Mr Siah, said that Mr Quek “kept blaming himself, and seemed to be at a loss”.

On Facebook, an ex-colleague of the senior civil servant by the name of Vanessa YC wrote that Quek-Ng was a caring boss. “She contributed her life working dedicatedly for the past 30 years working in the civil service. Retiring in few months. They are a loving couple. Hope that her husband will not blame himself for this accident. Nobody wants it to happen. I will always remember your cheerfulness & you will live in my memory.”
