SINGAPORE — Construction on the Canberra MRT Station on the North-South Line will start in the middle of this year after the Land Transport Authority (LTA) awarded the S$90 million construction contract to China State Construction Engineering Corporation (Singapore).

Located between Sembawang and Yishun MRT stations along Canberra Link, Canberra Station will serve commuters living in nearby estates such as Sembawang Springs, as well as a mix of forthcoming public and private residential developments in the neighbourhood.

Once the station is completed, residents in the district will no longer have to take a bus to Sembawang or Yishun to take the MRT, saving up to 10 minutes of travel time for those going towards the city centre or Jurong East.

Canberra Station will be the second MRT station in Singapore to be built on an existing rail line — the first was Dover Station, which opened between Clementi and Buona Vista stations on the East-West Line in 2001.

Canberra Station will have five entrances linking it to the new housing estates across Canberra Link. There will also be an elevated link bridge built across Canberra Link, which will allow commuters to bypass the station’s concourse level to directly access the city-bound train platform.

Established in 1992, China State Construction Engineering Corporation (Singapore) is also currently working on the construction of Downtown Line 3’s Kaki Bukit and Geylang Bahru stations. JORDON SIMPSON
