SINGAPORE — The Chinese New Year season is just round the corner but work to keep the country safe continues at Singapore's Changi Airport. Parliamentary Secretary for Home Affairs Amrin Amin visited the airport's Terminal 3 yesterday (Feb 6) to witness its operational facilities.

This is his first official visit to the airport since taking office in October last year. He met frontline officers, greeted travellers and was also briefed on the airport's security measures to cope with the expected surge in passenger movements during the festive period.

"We have additional shifts to process the higher passenger flow and we have to make sure that we process quickly without compromising on safety," said Mr Amrin. "That is not just unique to Changi Airport."

He added: "We have people going to Malaysia for reunion dinners and going on shopping trips to make use of the long weekend. So it's very important that we do not compromise on efficiency and safety. Of course, there are various measures to do with technology ... CCTVs, for example."

On her colleagues, Immigration and Checkpoints Authority team leader, Inspector Serene Oh, said: "They understand that this is an annual event, and it's the festive season so we all are in good spirits and they're willing and happy to help out with the deployment and the management of the manpower."

Assistant team leader, Inspector Kumara Vellu, agreed: "They have to perform more working hours and definitely it affects their family time but to be very honest, their family members have been very supportive and very understanding to this issue all for a main cause — the security and safety of Singapore."
