INCHEON — Sprinter Muhammad Amirudin Jamal has qualified for the Asian Games’ men’s 100m semi-final after clocking a season’s best time of 10.61sec in the heats today (Sept 27).

The 27-year-old will compete in the semi-final at the Incheon Asiad Main Stadium at 7.22 pm (Korea time) tomorrow.

“It didn’t go exactly as planned because I almost cramped up at the start,” said Amirudin. “The blocks are not what I’m used and I had to adjust on the spot. It’s still a season beat, but a bit disappointed that I didn’t hit a 10.5 but that’s okay.”

Teammate Calvin Kang did not advance to the 100m semi-final after clocking 10.67 in Heat 4. Asian Games debutante Shanti Pereira — who holds the national women’s 100m record of 11.89sec — finished fourth in her heat in 12.02sec, and the 18-year-old will not advance to the final.

The heats for the women’s 400m also saw Goh Chui Ling and T Piriyah clocking 58.56sec and 58.73sec respectively, and both athletes will not advance to the next round.
